Avalara Avatax

This compatibility add-on for our WooCommerce Sync for QuickBooks Desktop plugin enhances our plugin to sync WooCommerce orders over to QuickBooks Desktop with the correct tax rate assessed to the order by Avalara’s Avatax service. This is usually used as an alternative to local WooCommerce tax rates, typically to alleviate the pressure of having to manage hundreds or thousands of tax rates in WooCommerce.

The benefit to using Avalara is that you no longer need to individually track Sales Tax in QuickBooks Desktop. You can record all sales tax to a single Sales Tax Payable account in QuickBooks Desktop, and because Avalara provides the reporting/filing ability, you would simply let Avalara tell you how much tax is due, and write that out of the Sales Tax Payable account in QuickBooks Desktop.

What do I need?

  1. You can buy our compatibility add-on here.
  2. Avalara/Avatax for WooCommerce (you must already have this service)

Getting Started

Once you have both Avalara’s WooCommerce plugin installed, and our Avalara compatibility plugin ordered above – it’s time to install and configure them.

  1. Install our compatibility plugin by uploading the zip file in Plugins > Add New in your WordPress admin, or by uploading the plugin files to wp-content/plugins via FTP.
  2. Once our plugin is installed, you may activate it.
  3. You can turn on Avalara support by following the below steps
    1. Visit MyWorks Sync > Compatibility in your WordPress admin sidebar. If you can’t find this tab, ensure you’ve activated our compatibility plugin.
    2. In the section labeled WooCommerce AvaTax, click the switch to turn on compatibility.
    3. Then, in the same section, choose the QuickBooks Desktop product that will represent your Sales Tax product. This should be a Sales Tax Item in QuickBooks Desktop.  The Tax Rate set to this item in QuickBooks will not matter – as we override the amount with the amount charged in the WooCommerce order.

Once you’ve completed the above steps, future WooCommerce orders will be correctly synced to QuickBooks Desktop with the Avalara tax being recorded to the appropriate QuickBooks Desktop product for Sales Tax: your Sales Tax Payable account.
